Nanxun and Xitang, located in Zhejiang Province, are two of the most fascinating water towns of all China.Nanxun is unique for the constant union between Chinese architectural style and European style. Rich merchants of the past, called the "Four Elephants", left a huge wealth of residences and gardens. Xitang, with its great deal of authenticity, is characterized by covered corridors, narrow streets and picturesque landscapes. Famous for providing a background to the Tom Cruise race in the film Mission Impossible III.
Our itinerary starts from Nanxun. We advise you to enter the scenic area using the south entrance. On the left you will see a beautiful lake full of lotus plants, just a part of the Liu Residence. Belonging to the richest man in the city, it homes the most spectacular garden in Nanxun and beautiful pavilions of different styles. On the opposite side of the small canal do not miss Zhang Shiming Old Residence. This ancient residence, testifies to the enormous wealth accumulated by the family and a great aesthetic taste. Reached the main canal of the city, continue on the right side. You will then come across the famous Red House. A building of enormous value, symbol of the union between Chinese architectural style and Western style. Before leaving Nanxun, be sure to stroll around a place of extreme charm. One Hundred Residential Houses is a little further to the north, stands out for its incredible authenticity and for its particular architectures. Our next destination is about a 1 hour drive from Nanxun.
When you reach Xitang, we suggest you start your visit from the western side of the scenic area, and then head east. You will immediately catch the beauty of the canal and the ancient streets and alleys. Along West Street you will meet the Shipi alley, the narrowest and most famous street in the city. Continuing on West Street you will find the Western Garden, a must-see stop on a visit to Xitang. It includes an elegant residence and an internal courtyard with typically traditional features. Ancient stone bridges are one other of Xitang's wonders. From the top of the Huanxiu Bridge (coming back to West Street) you will enjoy an incredible view of the main canal. On the other side of the river, you will meet the true protagonist of the unique landscape of Xitang, the covered corridors. You will learn about the typical products of the artisanal and gastronomic tradition of the city, or stage a run like in the famous scene of the film. At this point, go east, enjoying all the charm of the canals and streets of Xitang. In the south-eastern part of the scenic area you can visit the Ni Residence. After visiting many houses of great value, in this place you can get in touch with the life of ordinary people of the past. Before leaving the city be sure to see and photograph the Wolong Bridge. Located at the north-east end, it is characterized by its size, elegant lines and a legendary history.
